Brothers Help Meet Medical Needs

Dr. Lee McCluskey, an orthopedic surgeon from St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, wanted to help alleviate suffering after seeing the devastation in Haiti. Dr. McCluskey previously has served with World Medical Mission, so he contacted Samaritan's Purse to see if he could help. He joined one of the first medical teams we flew into the country, and spent two weeks working at the Baptist Haiti Mission hospital.

"It was a little overwhelming at first, just with the chaos and the numbers," he said. "As orthopedists we sort of went pretty quickly to the operating room and started doing what we know how to do."

He also did something about the critical shortage of surgical supplies shortly after arriving in country. He contacted his brother, Dr. George McCluskey, also an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, who organized the donation of about $100,000 of medical supplies from St. Frances.

WRBL News 3, a CBS affiliate in Columbus, featured Dr. McCluskey on its newscast Thursday. Watch the video below.
